Real Life companies made various efforts to use Second Life as a marketing platform. Mostly rather unsuccesfull. Second Life was hyped once as a new marketing platform, it turned out to be not so suitable for many brands and products.
The Lindens still seem to dream of SL as a world where big business meets their clients. All others know..it was tried and it didn’t work. SL is to play, not to sell RL computer appliances.
All these places look empty and deserted. You can learn less than on the front page of their web sites. Only the Pathfinder place is really worth visiting.
Yes. It all is really that bad.

Coca Cola – Virtual Thirst
A good looking pavilion where you can get a free T-shirt and a can of cola (they left the top and bottom blanc -too difficult?), watch a few ancient video clips, learn nothing about coca cola, have a 99.9% chance you’ll be the only one there, be annoyed by their not-working “experience machine”, feel a desire for a Pepsi coming up and teleport out again. The only good reason to go here is in case you are a marketing student, you can learn here that even the best sometimes do something that just sucks. I spent at least an hour here..really wondering if I overlook something. The place is really owned by Coca Cola and it really is that bad. |

DELL
DELL makes computers. You are reading this, so you already have one. No idea what they try to achieve with the DELL island. The free monitor I got (an SL one, not a real one) was a box with nothing in it. Dissapointing. You can go and learn what is great about Windows Vista. Also not that new anymore, we have windows 7 now. The Dell museum is some kind of cinema with stairs towards it that make you have to jump and fall. (The entire place is very badly built, I assume their computers are better) I just couldn’t figure out – once again – why you should go here and how this island benefits DELL. You are really bored? Go have a look. |

Sun Microsystems
Yes, the creators of Java are also on SL. I learned here that they can also provide services as consolidating ones data center. I guess if you have a datacenter to be consolidated you are geeky enough to find information about that somewhere else. Also after carefully examining Sun’s SL exhibit I have no idea what it means. Actually you find nothing here. There is no information, no interaction. Actualy.. there isn’t much at all. Perhaps Linden Labs buys a lot of consolidated Data Centers from Sun and Sun wanted to do something in return and bought a Sim. Or they were drunk one day? Or they really think this place doesn’t look silly? I haven’t got the slightest clue why you should want to visit this place. |

Reuters
Reuters is one of the worlds biggest news agencies. They even once had a reporter who was full-time bringing the news about Second Life. He is already long time gone, reporting news in the real world again. Reuters Island still exists. You can watch a few videos about the latest new for Real Life,, cleary not updated too frequently. They don’t even try to bring something that might be slightly interesting for whoever. Reuters just forgot to take this place away. Unless you are studying the history of SL and want to see this artefact of days that have long time gone, you have no reason to go here. |
