A few basics

Profiles

Avatars have profiles. You have one too, when you are just new it is mostly empty. You can see the profile of another avatar by right clicking him and choosing profile from the menu that comes up.

On every profile you can see

  • The age of the resident (how long is this person in Second Life)
  • Account status (did he ever buy L$ or not?)
  • The name of his partner (if any)
  • The groups he is a member off
  • A photo and a little text about this person if he found it necessary to put that information.

So if someone is talking to you and you want to find out more about that someone, check his profile. You see someone nice and want to say something, perhaps read his profile first.

Others will have a look at your profile too. You can edit it in the menu Me / My Profile. Write something about yourself, that is about your avatar. Hold back a bit about giving Real Life information.

Use those arrow keys !

You can move your avatar by using the little arrows that are shown when you press the move button on the bottom of your screen. Some think it is the only way, it is not: A much easier way to move around is using the arrow keys on your keyboard.

Alt-Mouse = Zoom around

Press the ALT key and move the mouse to look around. You can look around over great distances, and walls don’t have to block your view.

Looks matter

Work on your looks, at least a little bit. There is plenty of clothing, skins and hair available, also at zero cost at the big freebie stores..get some.

Why? Because you want to be taken serious ( I assume) so also take yourself serious. You look at others, others look at you. Your avatar is an expression of yourself, don’t let it express : Too damn lazy to get some decent clothes.

Say something, besides Hi

You want to send an Instant Message to another avatar? Or say something in public. Make sence. Every girl gets tons of messages saying “Hi, how are you? Where are you from?”

You want to start a conversation with someone? Say something that makes sense, or you will be ignored a lot.

Ask..

If someone is very busy doing very important things he most likely would not be logged in at Second Life at the same time. In case you do encounter some problem you don’t understand or want to know something: Ask the people around you.

You will be very pleasantly surprised how many are willing to spend a lot of time to help you out.
